Job Summary: 

Under the direction of the Pool Manager, Head Instructor, or Head Guard, this position is responsible for teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding at Meridian Community Swimming Pool. 


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Completes all onboarding specifications, prior to first scheduled shift/s. 
  • Attend all required meetings, trainings, and in-services.
  • Communicates any schedule conflicts, time off requests, etc., prior to beginning of regular season.
  • Follows lifeguarding rotation as assigned per shift, and is willing to adjust position/s if needed throughout duration of shift. 
  • Follow all pool policies, rules, and procedures, ultimately setting a positive example for others
  • Becomes familiar with all guidelines, and is confident in administering Swim Tests during Open Swim hours, as well as addressing any concerns associated with Swim Test results. 
  • Communicates any safety concerns to either supervisor, or pool manager immediately - as patron safety is the number one concern.
  • Participates in helping set up/break down pool deck for Swim lessons, Open Swim, Swim Team, etc., with appropriate supplies and equipment, regardless of position.
  • Assist with maintenance activities as assigned (picking up trash, organizing pool deck, cleaning locker rooms, cleaning restrooms, vacuuming pool, replacing supplies, etc.)
  •  Attend pre-season Swim Lesson Instructor training, shadow various instructors/ levels throughout the course of 1-2 weeks as assigned, become familiar with curriculum all swim lesson levels, and begin teaching individually once comfortability has been met.  Demonstrates patience, kindness, and understanding in any/all situations involving coworkers, children, parents, patrons, etc. 
  • Responsible for the completion of all swim students report cards, prior to the last day of each session. 
  • Responsible for completing all online coursework, via Ellis and Associates, prior to attending training. 
  • Punctual and reliable attendance, and communicates any unforeseen changes in attendance directly to manager.
  •  Assists all patrons to the best of Lifeguards ability, and directs any unknown questions or concerns to either Headguard, Front Office, or Manager. 
  • Complete any other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to concentrate on task at hand, and not be easily distracted by ongoing activities at facility, patrons, etc.
  • Willingness to learn new skills, in various positions. 
     

Knowledge, Skills, &Abilities:

  • Must have the ability to work weekdays and weekends. 
  • Must have the ability to work a minimum of 25 hours a week. 
  • Must demonstrate strong communication skills for interacting with parents, participants, and spectators;
  • Ability to learn Swim Lesson curriculum, demonstrate associated skills, and complete all written report cards in a professional manner. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with respect to citizen groups, other city personnel and the public;
  • Ability to physically perform the essential functions of the job;
  • Upholds and maintains a team oriented and respectful attitude; 
  • Integrity in the performance of assigned tasks.
  • Must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Ability to communicate openly, honestly, and respectfully with fellow coworkers, supervisors, and manager. 
     

Licensing and Certification:

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Lifeguard certification through Ellis and Associates.
     

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

Work is performed primarily outside. Location can be subject to changing environmental conditions. Precautions should be taken to appropriately deal with weather conditions.  Occasionally work will occur in an office environment.  Either environment can range from low noise levels to loud and have intermittent disruptions.

  • Requires constant movement and the ability to regularly lift up to 25 pounds. Occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Constantly requires clarity of speech and hearing, which permits employee to communicate effectively.
  • Constantly requires clear vision to read printed materials and to accomplish work.
  • Constantly requires sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes to permit employee to function safely.
  • May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions and toxic/caustic chemicals. Proper protective equipment should be worn when appropriate.
     

Travel Requirements:

  • Local travel is occasionally required.
