Starting Hourly Wage: $19.85-$23.60 depending on experienceJob Summary The primary function of a Hazardous Waste Screener is to provide customer service to the public and screen loads to be dumped for foreign objects, toxic, and hazardous materials according to landfill rules and regulations. The position is under the direct supervision of the Landfill Supervisor. The principal duties of this position are in an outdoor environment with exposure to adverse weather conditions, landfill hazards, and odors.Key Responsibilities Customer Service: Greets the public and commercial customers, directing them to proper dumping locationMonitors customer activities for compliance to rules and regulations of the landfill and customer safetyAssists customers with resolution of complaints, misunderstandings and problems referring to landfill rules and regulationsLoad Screening & Handling: Inspects loads for hazardous materials and foreign objects and separates hazards according to landfill rules and regulationsChecks metal cylinders for explosive gases and soil loads for contaminantsMonitors burn barrels and assists in extinguishing barrel firesWitnesses' burial of specialized loads from sheriff and police departmentsCleans up oil disposal areas as necessaryRelieves equipment operators as authorizedRecords and notifies scale house of rejected loadsOther Duties: Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County and Department policies, procedures and safety practices.Other duties as assignedQualifications Skills and Abilities: County landfill rules and regulations, hazardous waste rules and regulationsEmergency response practices and procedures;Safety practices and procedures related to landfill operations;Follow written and oral instructionsOperate a variety of landfill equipment and a two-way radioPerform multiple tasks simultaneously, including handling interruptions, and return to and complete tasks in a timely mannerCommunicate effectively with the public, including in sensitive situationsSpecial Qualifications Idaho driver's licenseSuccessfully complete background investigationEducation and Experience High school diploma or GED equivalency preferred, with specialized training in hazardous materials, chemical handling and first aidOne year experience in customer service preferredAny equivalent combination of experience may be consideredEssential Physical Abilities Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively with the public in person;Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, and inspect, separate, and recognize hazardous materials and foreign objects;Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to separate foreign objects, handle hazardous materials, and operate landfill equipment;Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, strength, stamina, agility, and balance, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift/move up to 50 pounds, stand and walk for long periods of time, and work in outdoor weather conditions in a landfill environment.Disclaimer: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the primary job responsibilities satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.
