Senior Technical Editor

Join our team as a Senior Technical Editor and support a federal transportation research center by leading the editorial team behind high-stakes technical publications. You will oversee the entire editorial process for complex reports and documentation, mentor junior editors, and ensure every deliverable meets the highest standard of accuracy and style compliance.

Position is contingent upon contract award

Work Schedule and Location:

Remote: This full-time remote position will work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET (core hours fall within a 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. ET window), with occasional in-person travel to Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center, McLean, VA (or Dept of Transportation HQ in Washington, DC), for meetings and coordination as needed. Some additional travel within the continental U.S. may be required for conferences and events.

Responsibilities
  • Direct the editorial process for high-visibility technical documents, reports, and manuals
  • Verify technical accuracy, fact-check references, and ensure copyright compliance
  • Mentor and guide junior technical writers and editors
  • Manage the full lifecycle of documents from outline through final web/print publication
  • Ensure strict adherence to the GPO Style Manual and agency style guides
Qualifications

Required:

  • Master's degree in English, Journalism, or a technical field
  • 10+ years of experience, including supervisory and project management experience

Desired:

  • Highway/surface transportation experience
  • Demonstrated mentorship of junior editorial staff
