Purpose

The Maintenance Technician - Food Service Equipment Specialist is responsible for maintaining, servicing, and repairing School Nutrition Services (SNS) kitchen equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and continuous operation across district sites. This position works within the Maintenance Department while supporting the specialized needs of School Nutrition Services. Responsibilities include responding to service calls, performing preventive maintenance, documenting repairs, and assisting with general maintenance tasks as assigned.

Supervision Received and Exercised

The Maintenance Technician works under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, Assistant Supervisor or designee.

Essential Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Check and respond to work orders related to School Nutrition Services equipment in a timely manner.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial kitchen appliances including ovens, steamers, warmers, mixers, dish machines, coolers, and freezers.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PMs) on SNS equipment and maintain accurate PM documentation.
• Monitor refrigeration and freezer systems to ensure proper temperature control and operation.
• Maintain detailed records of all equipment repairs, service calls, and preventive maintenance.
• Communicate effectively with Nutrition Services leadership and kitchen staff regarding equipment conditions and repair timelines.
• Ensure all work is completed in accordance with district safety standards and procedures.
• Assist with district-wide maintenance including basic carpentry, painting, drywall, cabinetry, welding, small building repairs, minor electrical, plumbing, and mechanical troubleshooting as needed.
• Inspect facilities and help establish work priorities when participating in general maintenance activities.
• Maintain district tools, equipment, and service vehicles.
• Assist with monitoring and coordinating work performed by external contractors.
• Respond to emergency maintenance calls after hours as required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of commercial kitchen equipment repair, including gas, electric, and mechanical systems.
• Operation, maintenance, and repair of commercial refrigeration systems, including coolers and freezers.
• Troubleshooting techniques specific to food service equipment and cold storage systems.
• Preventive maintenance practices and documentation, including maintaining accurate logs and service records.
• Basic building trades, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical systems, and welding.
• Reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, diagrams, and equipment specifications.
• Safe operation and maintenance of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in maintenance work.

Ability to:

• Diagnose, repair, and maintain food service equipment and related systems in a timely and effective manner.
• Read, understand, and apply technical instructions, manuals, and schematics.
• Follow written and verbal instructions with attention to detail and safety.
• Work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple work orders in a fast-paced environment.
• Maintain accurate records, reports, and preventive maintenance schedules.
• Communicate effectively and provide strong customer service when working with school staff and stakeholders.
• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and district vehicles.
• Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, stooping, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces.
• Work in a variety of environments, including indoor, outdoor, and rooftop settings, and respond to varying work conditions.
• Demonstrate sufficient vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to safely operate equipment, interpret diagnostics, and complete repairs.
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, with supervisors, staff, contractors, and school site personnel.

Qualifications

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.

• High school diploma or GED equivalency required.
• Two years of maintenance or technical repair experience, three to five years preferred.
• Experience in commercial kitchen or appliance repair preferred.
• Must have a valid Idaho driver's license and a vehicle to drive and/or they must provide their own transportation for job related activities. The job related travel during the day will be reimbursed at the approved state mileage reimbursement rate.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES

• Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to understand verbal instructions, communicate effectively with supervisors and staff, and identify audible safety warnings.
• Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to read work orders, manuals, and diagrams; observe work conditions; and identify safety hazards.
• Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
• Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, stand and walk for extended periods, bend, kneel, climb, and perform maintenance tasks in indoor and outdoor environments.

EVALUATION

Evaluated annually by the Maintenance Supervisor.
