Culinary Program Assistant Instructor - Front of House (FOH)

Purpose

The Front of House (FOH) Instructor plays a vital role in preparing senior-level students for careers in the hospitality and culinary industries. This position focuses on teaching industry-standard FOH practices, including customer service, point-of-sale (POS) systems, order entry and expedition, and fine dining service. The instructor will guide students in mastering both state and American Culinary Federation (ACF) competencies through hands-on learning and real-world simulations.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Duties

  • Deliver engaging, standards-based instruction aligned with West Ada School District curriculum and Idaho Professional Technical Education guidelines.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that accommodate diverse learning styles and meet required competencies.
  • Provide written evidence of instructional planning and preparation.
  • Use a variety of instructional methods and media to maximize student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate student performance fairly and consistently, maintaining accurate records and providing timely feedback.

Classroom & Student Management

  • Create a safe, inclusive, and professional learning environment.
  • Establish and maintain clear expectations for student behavior and performance.
  • Identify and support students with academic, behavioral, or personal challenges in collaboration with other staff.

Professionalism & Collaboration

  • Model professional behavior appropriate for a school setting.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and community partners to support program goals.
  • Participate in school and community events such as open houses, catering functions, and lunch service.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule to support service and training days.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Current trends and best practices in the hospitality and culinary industries.
  • FOH operations including customer service, POS systems, and food service flow.
  • Cash handling and basic record-keeping procedures.
  • Instructional technology, including Microsoft Teams, Office 365, and OneNote.

Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver meaningful, competency-based lessons.
  • Adapt to changing classroom needs and schedules.
  • Evaluate student work objectively and constructively.
  • Utilize technology to enhance instruction and classroom management.

Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or culinary school preferred.
  • Professional FOH experience required; experience with POS systems preferred.
  • ServSafe Certification
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions, exercise sound judgment, and work independently.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and instructional improvement.
  • Willingness to pursue the LOS (Local Occupational Specialist) certificate over time.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate clearly in person and via phone.
  • Visual acuity to read and prepare instructional materials.
  • Manual dexterity to operate standard office and classroom equipment.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 20 pounds and remain active throughout the instructional day.

Evaluation

  • Performance will be evaluated annually by the program supervisor.

Terms of Employment

  • Employment terms determined by the school calendar.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Employment is at-will, meaning either the employee or the West Ada School District may terminate the relationship at any time, with or without cause or notice.
