Responsibilities
Clinical Department Educator RN is responsible for developing, conducting and evaluating inservice programs, orientation and continuing education for nurses, students and other staff in a specified clinical area; develops educational policies and procedures; serves as a resource person to staff and management; participates in Continuous Quality Performance Improvement activities; serves on special committees as needed; responsible for patient care as needed.
a) Demonstrates sufficient knowledge to independently perform the duties of the position as stated in the job description
i) develops and directs orientation programs, inservices and continuing education for the nursing and auxiliary staff in a designated clinical department
ii) develops objectives for each inservice and evaluates presentation and teaching material through staff input and suggestions
iii) ability to develop instructional materials
iv) ability to set up and demonstrate patient care equipment
v) maintains current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
vi) Completes annual educational requirements
vii) Maintains regulatory requirements
b) contributes to the growth and development of the department by participating in projects and committees
i) participates in staff development programs, staff meetings, and all mandatory inservices
c) recognizes areas of strengths, limitations, and goals in self, and seeks ways to improve self using this knowledge
i) enhances professional growth by accepting own responsibility for remaining current and competent, through membership and attendance, with professional organizations and review of current literature.
d) adheres to and supports the established policies of the hospital

g) ensures that proper techniques and practices are used according to TVH standards of practice, policies and procedures, and physician preferences

a) Supervises nurse preceptor program

d) Responsible for developing a budget for educational programs; able to write grant proposals, if necessary
e) Assists with organization-wide education projects
f) Documents staff attendance at inservices
g) Ensures educational requirements, organization requirements and standards are met on an annual basis by all staff members
h) Evaluates and documents staff performance of clinical skills
i) Orients new clinical staff members; evaluates skill competencies during the 90-day probationary period
j) Plans and coordinates conferences and seminars; uses community resources
k) Videotapes seminars, classes and demonstrations for future use
l) May perform clinical duties, if needed
m) Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical or healthcare errors
n) Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality
o) Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors
p) Demonstrates the ability to be flexible and organized
q) Studies current trends, new technology/development, teaching methodologies through professional journals, seminars, conferences, professional societies, etc.

i) charges appropriately for supplies and time charges
ii) clocks out on time when duties do not necessitate overtime
y) participates (as requested) in continuous quality improvement, quality assurance, and quality control activities for the department and facility

Qualifications
License or Certification
Total Education, Vocational Training, and Experience
BSN from an accredited nursing school
Minimum of 2.5 years nursing experience is preferred.
