West Ada School District is seeking dedicated, experienced professionals to join our team as Campus Sentinels. Campus Sentinels serve to provide a vigilant yet discreet presence designed to deter threats, identify risks early, and preserve a secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.

We are looking for individuals with proven law enforcement backgrounds who remain calm under pressure, believe in teamwork, and are motivated by service. In this role, you will partner closely with building leaders and local law enforcement while using your expertise in situational awareness, crisis response, and de-escalation to help safeguard what matters most - our kids.

Purpose

The Campus Sentinel enhances the safety, security, and well-being of students, staff, and visitors by providing a proactive and discreet presence across district campuses. This position serves as a trained safety observer whose primary role is to deter unsafe or unlawful behavior, identify potential threats early, and support a secure learning environment through observant patrol, situational awareness and collaborative partnerships with school staff and law enforcement. The Campus Sentinel may be armed in accordance with district policy and state law, requiring proper training and certification. This position works collaboratively with school administrators, staff, and local law enforcement as needed.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Work is performed under the supervision of the Administrator of Security and Behavior, in collaboration with building administration. The Campus Sentinel exercises independent judgment in performing routine security duties, responding to incidents, and monitoring campus activities within established policies and procedures.

Essential Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain a proactive, discrete presence across assigned campuses, including building, grounds, parking areas and common spaces.
  • Observe and promptly report incidents, suspicious behavior, policy violations, or emerging safety issues to school administrators and safety team.
  • Support response to critical safety incidents in coordination with School Resource Officers (SROs), local law enforcement, and building leadership.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies, incidents, or unsafe situations involving an imminent threat to life.
  • Utilize professional law enforcement experience to assess threats and maintain a secure environment.
  • Participate in safety drills, emergency preparedness activities, and districtwide safety initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of incidents, actions taken, and observations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information in accordance with FERPA and district policies.
  • Follow all District policies, legal requirements, certification requirements, established safety, security, and emergency protocols.
  • Attend required training sessions related to safety, emergency response, or security procedures.
  • Perform other security and/or safety related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • School safety procedures, security practices, threat deterrence and emergency response protocols.
  • Safe handling, storage, and use of firearms in compliance with state law and district policy.
  • Legal and ethical responsibilities related to student safety, supervision, confidentiality, use of force and compliance with applicable laws.
  • Crisis intervention techniques, effective conflict resolution strategies and de-escalation methods.
  • Law enforcement practices, threat assessment, and emergency response techniques.
  • Operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications for word processing, spreadsheets, database creation and maintenance, information storage and retrieval, and related tasks;
  • English grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Current office practices and procedures.
Ability to:
  • Maintain high situational awareness, observing and interpreting behavior and environmental cues that may indicate safety concerns.
  • Respond calmly, appropriately, and decisively in high-stress situations, including emergency incidents or potential threats.
  • Observe, assess, and respond quickly to incidents or safety hazards.
  • Safely handle and use firearms in accordance with training, certification, and district policy.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing.
  • Work collaboratively with school staff, administrators, and law enforcement as needed.
  • Operate with integrity, sound judgment, and ethical conduct at all times.
  • Operate and use modern office equipment, including computers and appropriate software.
  • Maintain regular attendance and adhere to prescribed work schedule to conduct job responsibilities.
Qualifications

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • High school diploma or GED required; advanced education in criminal justice, law enforcement, public safety or related field preferred.
  • Current and valid POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) certification required. Must adhere to annual training requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience in law enforcement; must be in good standing.
  • Knowledge and experience in safe handling, storage, and use of firearms in compliance with state law and district policy.
  • Strong understanding of threat assessment, emergency response, and de-escalation techniques.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain professionalism, and act decisively under high-stress or emergency situations.
  • Must pass all required background checks and maintain any additional certifications required by the district.
Essential Physical Abilities
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate effectively with students, staff, and visitors, and to quickly understand verbal instructions or safety-related information in dynamic campus environments.
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to operate communication devices, firearms, safety equipment, and standard office or reporting tools.
  • Sufficient mobility, agility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, to walk or stand for extended periods, move throughout large campuses (including stairs and outdoor terrain), respond quickly in emergencies, and occasionally lift or move objects up to 60 pounds.
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to sit and work at a keyboard for an extended period of time, and work in an office environment.
