ITD is seeking a talented Public Information Officer to join our Office of Communication and help tell the story of one of the top transportation departments in the nation. This is a unique opportunity to use your media relations, writing, and strategic communication skills to connect communities with the work that keeps Idaho moving.
This position will be based in Boise, Idaho (District 3) and will also remotely provide partial support to District 2, with occasional travel to Lewiston expected.
What You'll Do
As a key member of the communications team, you'll serve as a trusted voice and strategic advisor, helping shape how ITD communicates with the public, media, and stakeholders statewide. Responsibilities include:
Serving as a media spokesperson and managing news releases, briefings, and crisis communications
Leading and executing communication plans for major transportation projects, including coordination with consultants and contractors
Building strong relationships with community stakeholders, local governments, partner agencies, and legislators
Advising leadership on public relations, media strategy, and department messaging
Developing, managing, and evaluating ITD's social media presence and public-facing outreach efforts
Planning and facilitating public meetings, outreach events, and engagement campaigns
Editing and producing a wide range of communication materials, including publications, correspondence, and brochures
Supporting internal communications and providing public relations training
Contributing to the Office of Communication's strategic goals and advancing ITD's overall mission

Exceptional writing and storytelling skills
Experience working with news media
A strong understanding of effective social media and public engagement strategies
The ability to collaborate across teams and manage multiple projects
Confidence in public speaking and stakeholder engagement

Developing and making oral presentations to groups
Interpreting and translating technical or specialized material into information usable by the public
Producing or editing informational material using electronic word processing
Gathering and preparing general interest news or writing a variety of news releases that were published or broadcast in mass media for the general public
Developing, writing, and producing informational material for mass distribution and specialized audiences
Overseeing contractors/vendors/staff in producing publications
