PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER I

POSITION SUMMARY

Parks Maintenance Worker I performs routine grounds maintenance and construction on all aspects of parks and recreation facilities in one or all the following areas, horticulture, pathway maintenance, irrigation, janitorial, shelter preparation, mowing, edging, trimming, weed control, repair, inspection, and service work in City parks, public areas, or structure. Duties require work to be completed courteously, safely, and efficiently. Incumbents will work under the supervision of the Parks Director and designated supervisor who issues written or oral orders.The principal duties of this class are performed outdoors and may include working in adverse weather conditions and hazards involving the use of power tools, equipment, and hazardous chemicals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (MAY VARY BY ASSIGNMENT)

  • Assist under general direction with irrigation monitoring, adjustments, and repairs.
  • Perform soil and plant cultivation, fertilization applications, watering, aerating,
  • Maintains and cleans restrooms, drinking fountain facilities, drainage ditches, surfaced areas, sidewalks, including trash and debris removal.
  • Performs turf, tree, flower, and shrub planting, trimming and pruning, and removal; assist in tree trimming operation by clearing trees and branches. including trash and debris removal
  • Shovels snow from sidewalks, biking trails and spreads ice-melt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup.
  • Repair and maintain fences, playground equipment, gates, doors, walks, and walkways using hammer, saws, paint brushes and appropriate hand tools, spade, pick, hoe, shovels, tamper and jack hammer or other power tools as directed.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs benches, tables, slabs, receptacles, playground, and recreational equipment, playing fields, structures, and signs.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs motorized, mechanical and grounds keeping equipment, and machinery.
  • Performs operation, installation, maintenance, and repair of automated irrigation systems, including lines and heads.
  • Provides facility and equipment security, including opening and closing and locking and unlocking facilities.
  • Vandalism and graffiti cleanup, removal, and restoration
  • Assists in construction projects.
  • Provides information to inquiries made by the public.
  • Sets up, and breaks down after programs, reservations, and special events.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Supervises seasonal employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Functions, characteristics and proper use and care of common hand tools and power tools
  • Basic ground maintenance skills, including but not limited to, mowing, planting, weeding, pruning, irrigation, and fertilization.
  • Basic building custodial skills including, but not limited to, cleaning restrooms, floors, windows, and fixtures.
  • Basic grounds keeping equipment maintenance and repair skills.
  • Operate and maintain power equipment, including but not limited to, ground keeping turf equipment, mowers, trimmers, tractor, and related equipment.
  • Operate hand tools and power tools.
  • Operate a motor vehicle.
  • Operate, adjust, and monitor automated sprinkler control systems.
  • Maintain maintenance records, logs, and documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with the public, supervisors, and other City employees.
  • Basic plumbing and carpentry experience
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency is required.
  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Valid Idaho driver's license is required.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
  • Some experience in building and ground maintenance is preferred.
  • Demonstrate ability to drive a manual stick shift.
  • Painting, plumbing, carpentry, and related semi-skilled building trades work.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands, to reach with hands and arms.
  • The incumbent frequently is required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and occasionally required to sit, climb, and/or balance.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, discern equipment warning sounds and alarms, and communicate effectively on the telephone and in person.
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, operators' manuals, and diagrams.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to perform repetitive hand movement in gripping, fingering, and hand/wrist/arm movement with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a variety of ground keeping equipment.
  • Sufficient personal mobility, agility, balance, and flexibility to perform maintenance and repair operations and perform strenuous activities for extended periods of time in varied weather conditions in a park maintenance environment.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • The successful candidate will be expected to support and facilitate a workplace culture of dignity and respect. Additionally, he/she will be responsible and accountable for supporting the City's safety culture, event processes, efficiency, and the overall foundation of providing the best service possible to its constituency.
  • Work weekends, evenings, and holidays, as assigned.

JOB LOCATION -Kuna, Idaho

POSITION TYPE -Full-time

SALARY/WAGE -$20.40+ DOE
