Patrol Deputy

Under general supervision, exercises responsibilities for the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare. Exercises independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations, exercising safety practices and procedures. Works under stressful, high-risk conditions.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Take calls for service and patrol assigned areas.
  • Investigate and report accidents.
  • Investigate crimes, interview witnesses, complainants, and victims; and gather physical evidence and preserve for court; conduct follow up investigations as needed.
  • Apprehend, arrest and detain criminal suspects and law violators when necessary; follow proper procedures when making arrests.
  • Serve warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official papers.
  • Serve as witness in court and provide evidence in court as required.
  • Check residential and commercial property for security.
  • Assist motorists in various situations as needed.
  • Contact complainants and/or victims of crimes within a reasonable length of time; keep complainants or victims informed of progress of investigations.
  • Investigate and report fires or other related events; keep bystanders out of danger; safeguard property; and render first aid in emergency situations.
  • Prepare, process, and/or transmit various reports as required.
  • Record information concerning events that took place during tour of duty, and record such activity in the manner as prescribed by the department.
  • Maintain weapons and equipment in functional and presentable condition.
  • Transport mental patients and prisoners to prescribed locations as necessary.
  • Account for and transport evidence coming into custody.
  • Answer questions asked by the general public, work with juveniles and adults in related matters; refer public to person or agencies which can provide further assistance as required.
  • Watch for wanted or missing person and lost children; administer first aid to the injured in emergency cases; and report stray animals as necessary.
  • Attend shift meeting, seminars, and training sessions as required to remain knowledgeable of operations and promote job performance.
  • Attend required periodic training sessions and seminars; participate in required physical fitness activities.
  • Maintain required level of proficiency in the use of firearms, and evasive action/driving skills.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of modern crime prevention, investigation, apprehension, criminal identification, rules of evidence, record keeping and all other aspects of law enforcement.
    • Knowledge of the behavior of criminals and causes underlying criminality.
    • Ability to analyze complex police problems and to adopt quick, reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
    • Ability to develop and maintain adequate written case documentation and to assure proper document flow.
    • Ability to work multiple cases at one time and to assure continuity and development of each.
