Purpose

The Assistant Supervisor - Building Maintenance oversees Building Maintenance Area Supervisors and maintenance crews, while actively participating in skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work throughout District school and administrative facilities. This position assists with the coordination and supervision of maintenance activities and performs a wide range of hands-on tasks to ensure safe, functional, and well-maintained buildings. Work is performed in school buildings and outdoor environments, which may include exposure to adverse weather conditions and potential hazards such as high-voltage electricity, hazardous substances, chemicals, and power equipment.

Supervision Received and Exercised

The Assistant Supervisor works under the direction of the Building Maintenance Supervisor or designee. The position supervises assigned crews.

Essential Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assists in supervising and participating in building maintenance and repair operations, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, drywall, carpentry, remodeling, and minor construction tasks.
  • Supports the Supervisor in determining whether repairs should be handled internally or by outside contractors.
  • Monitors and inspects work performed by contractors as directed.
  • Advises on and coordinates work orders, schedules, and task assignments.
  • Conducts regular audits of work order system to ensure timely completion, even work s load, and proper communication according to department procedures.
  • Assists in evaluating the performance of Maintenance Area Supervisors and training new hires.
  • Helps implement and monitor periodic maintenance schedules.
  • Supports warranty compliance and new construction monitoring.
  • Assists in monitoring computerized diagnostic and control systems.
  • Contributes to budget tracking and capital outlay planning.
  • Performs duties in accordance with District policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • May be on call to respond to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Building trade methods and techniques including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting, masonry, and related maintenance practices.
  • Applicable building, safety, and utility codes, standards, and regulations governing school and public facilities.
  • Preventive maintenance principles and work order systems.
  • Basic budgeting and recordkeeping practices related to maintenance operations.
  • Safe work practices, hazard identification, and applicable safety regulations, including OSHA requirements and asbestos awareness and handling procedures.
  • Proper use, care, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and materials used in building maintenance.
Ability to:
  • Follow and interpret written and oral instructions, technical manuals, blueprints, schematics, and safety guidelines.
  • Safely and effectively operate a variety of power equipment, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment used in building maintenance and repair.
  • Perform skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks with accuracy, efficiency, and attention to detail.
  • Prepare, maintain, and review records, reports, work orders, and other documentation related to maintenance activities.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, with supervisors, staff, contractors, and school site personnel.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, administrators, vendors, and the public.
  • Organize work, manage multiple tasks, and prioritize assignments to meet operational needs and deadlines.
  • Exercise sound judgment, initiative, and problem-solving skills when addressing maintenance issues and unexpected situations.
  • Model safe work practices and support a culture of safety among maintenance staff.
Qualifications

Any equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Five years of general building trades or maintenance experience required.
  • Must have a valid Idaho driver's license and a vehicle to drive and/or they must provide their own transportation for job related activities. The job related travel during the day will be reimbursed at the approved state mileage reimbursement rate.
Essential Physical Abilities
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to understand verbal instructions, communicate effectively with supervisors and staff, and identify audible safety warnings.
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to read work orders, manuals, and diagrams; observe work conditions; and identify safety hazards.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, stand and walk for extended periods, bend, kneel, climb, and perform maintenance tasks in indoor and outdoor environments.
Evaluation

Evaluated annually by the Building Maintenance Supervisor.

Regular attendance is an essential function of this job.
  • Employment is "at will" and may be terminated by either party at any time, with or without cause or notice.
