As a Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO), you will be a key player in a workforce of over 60,000 professionals committed to enforcing laws and regulations to protect the American people. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws.
  • Facilitating legitimate trade and travel.
  • Conducting thorough inspections of people and vehicles.
  • Determining admissibility for entry into the United States.
  • Preventing illegal entry and smuggling of contraband.

Salary, Duties, and Incentives

New Customs and Border Protection Officers will benefit from various recruitment incentives, including annual bonuses up to $15,000 in specific high-demand locations. The base pay varies based on experience and education, ranging from:

  • GS-5: $40,332 - $109,952 per year.

In addition, fully trained officers can earn up to $45,000 in overtime pay. This position offers a clear career progression through various grade levels (GS-5 to GS-12) with promotion eligibility based on performance.

Qualifications Required:

To qualify for the GS-5 grade level:

  • A minimum of three years of general work experience, or
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, or
  • A combination of education and experience.

For the GS-7 grade level, you will need:

  • One year of specialized experience, or
  • A bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement, or
  • A combination of experience and graduate education.

Additional requirements include:

  • U.S. Citizenship is required to apply.
  • You must be a resident of the U.S. for at least three of the last five years.
  • Must be under the age of 40 upon selection, unless you have qualifying military or federal law enforcement experience.

Training: All selected candidates will undergo formal training including a two-week paid orientation followed by 101 days at the CBP Field Operations Academy. Specialized training is required for certain duty locations.
