About the role

Polymarket is looking for a world-class backend engineer to join our platform engineering team as we scale. The ideal candidate is obsessed with performance, security, and scalability-someone who can architect and optimize high-throughput systems with cutting-edge infrastructure. You will play a key role in building and maintaining the foundation that powers our prediction markets, ensuring reliability and efficiency as we continue to grow.
What you'll do

We're looking for an experienced individual contributor who enjoys working on deeply technical problems and optimizing mission-critical infrastructure.

• Architect & build backend systems. You'll design, implement, and maintain high-performance backend services and APIs that handle large-scale transactions and real-time data.
• Optimize performance & scalability. You'll push the limits of our system's throughput and efficiency, ensuring seamless operation at scale.
• Enhance security & reliability. You'll implement best practices for secure, fault-tolerant, and highly available distributed systems.
• Cross-company collaboration. You'll collaborate with front-end engineers, designers, and stakeholders across the company to deliver a fully integrated user experience.
• Contribute to code reviews. You'll play a critical role in maintaining the high quality of our codebase by providing feedback and suggestions on others' work during code review sessions.
• Participate in research & innovation. You'll stay at the forefront of blockchain-based trading technologies, exploring new solutions to improve our platform.
• Interface with Customers. You'll communicate directly with customers, providing support and gathering feedback.

• 8+ years of experience in backend development
• Experience architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact and high usage
• Master-level proficiency in systems programming languages like Golang, Rust, or C++
• Strong knowledge of database systems and internals (e.g., PostgreSQL, MongoDB)
• Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) and infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, Ansible)
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills
• (Plus) Blockchain-specific backend experience (e.g., working on BFT consensus engines, event indexing systems, libp2p)
• (Plus) Experience with Ethereum roll-up technologies (e.g., Arbitrum Nova, Optimism)
• (Plus) Open source contributor
• (Plus) Active participant on ethresear.ch
