Temporary Materials Handler

Explore a new career with the BLM - where our people are our most precious resource. This is a Public Notice for positions being filled under the Direct Hiring Authority (DHA) for Wildland Fire. Responsibilities include issuing fire equipment and supplies to personnel, utilizing predetermined guidelines and providing tracking, inventory, and receipt of property. Maintains stock, issues to firefighters, and maintains records showing inventories of all fire warehoused supplies and tools. Operates forklift in loading, unloading, and moving stock.

Conditions of Employment include Selective Service registration for males born after December 31, 1959, satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check, mandatory pre-employment drug test, and random drug testing during employment. Positions may require a valid state driver's license. Ability to operate a forklift may be required. You must be 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment.

Qualifications are determined by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in your resume. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Effort requires standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds on a recurring basis. The heavier items are moved with weight-handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Work is generally performed on a concrete or a hard surface floor. Working Conditions may occur in areas inside and outside that are hot, cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted. Materials handlers are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, and falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. The work is dirty, dusty, and greasy. Involves frequent driving and deliveries on paved and unimproved roads.

Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)/Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) provides eligible surplus and displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. Temporary employees hired in wildland fire or wildland fire support positions are eligible for annual, sick leave, and paid federal holidays, depending on tour of duty, Sunday, holiday, shift differential and/or hazard pay, participation in the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) program, and Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC) option after separating from federal employment.
