National Guard Aircraft Mechanic

This National Guard position is for an Aircraft Mechanic, Position Description Number D1366000 and is part of the ID 124 Maintenance Squadron, National Guard. This position is indefinite, NTE 5 years with the possibility to non-competitively convert at a later date. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing inspections, functional checks, and preventive maintenance on aircraft
  • Inspecting and performing functional checks on hydraulic, electrical, pressurization, lubrication, de-icing, vacuum, induction, and exhaust systems
  • Installing equipment such as external tanks, tow reels, hoists, and pylons
  • Troubleshooting and performing unscheduled maintenance on assigned and transient aircraft
  • Performing major adjustments and alignments of aircraft systems or components
  • Removing and replacing aircraft components such as control surfaces, engines, constant speed drive, engine mounted gear boxes, wing fuel tanks, landing gear mechanisms, wheels, brakes, and tires
  • Serving oil, fluid, fuel, hydraulic, and oxygen systems
  • Adjusting and maintaining installed equipment such as tow targets, hydraulic reels, and drive assemblies
  • Removing and replacing working or inoperative parts and elements
  • Performing operator maintenance on aircraft installed auxiliary power units
  • Towing, taxiing, parking, and mooring assigned and transient aircraft
  • Meeting and debriefing the aircrew on the status of the aircraft
  • Launching and recovering assigned and transient aircraft
  • Performing end-of-runway inspections prior to take-off
  • Inspecting for conditions such as oil, fuel, and hydraulic leaks; damaged tires; and loose panels
  • Performing user and organizational level maintenance on assigned support equipment
  • Inventories, controls, stores, and repairs 780 equipment
  • Accomplishing and reviewing nonpowered AGE and 780 equipment records relating to assigned equipment
  • Providing data for aircraft maintenance historical records, complete maintenance data collection, man-hour accounting, and other forms as required
  • Assisting the aircraft maintenance supply function in identifying parts and stock numbers and obtaining necessary parts and tools to perform assigned duties
  • Instructing, directing, and assigning maintenance repair tasks to drill status guard members
  • Observing work and ensuring compliance with standard procedures and applicable technical publications
  • Complying with safety, fire, security, and housekeeping regulations
  • Ensuring that material and equipment are properly stored, protected, maintained, and secured
  • Preparing for and participating in various types of readiness evaluations such as MEI, ORI, IG, and UE inspections, mobility and command support exercises
  • Performing additional duties as assigned

Requirements include:

  • General experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, and modification of fixed and rotary wing aircraft systems, airframes, components, and assemblies
  • Specialized experience installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting, and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification
  • Ability to coordinate the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow
  • Ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military, and other personnel in the disassembly and re-assembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container
