Design Studies Engineer (Line Design & EMT Studies) – Senior Level

POWER Engineers, Member of WSP. is seeking a Senior Design Studies Engineer with an emphasis on Line Design and EMT Studies. This position is posted in multiple POWER office locations with the ability to work remotely from a mutually acceptable location (please note in the application questions where you prefer to be located).

Roles and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for successful completion of assigned projects and for maintaining and improving client relationships. Completion of these functions requires technical competence in primary production roles as well as competence in working with clients and mentoring team members assigned to projects. Assigned projects will include AC and DC transmission line and substation design support studies for utility and commercial clients.

Studies will include the following:

  • Insulation coordination for AC and DC applications (lightning, switching surge/bipole failure, and contamination performance)

  • Transient (time domain) simulation

  • TRV analysis

  • Circuit breaker rating studies

  • Steady state unbalance and transposition studies

  • Single pole reclosing and associated design (secondary arc current)

  • Delayed zero crossing

  • Neutral reactor sizing

  • NESC clearance studies

  • Equipment minimum approach distance studies

  • Phase conductor sizing/selection (including DMR)

  • Optical shield wire sizing (and Coulomb rating)

  • Lightning performance prediction

  • Lightning/surge/voltage arrester application

  • Corona performance prediction

  • Corrosion analysis and mitigation

  • Finite-element electric/magnetic field analysis

  • Resonance studies/mitigation

  • Electric losses and economic considerations (net present value, etc.)

  • FACTS device implementation

Success in this engineering position requires an individual who can participate in the proposal writing process and enjoys customer contact to assist in developing new opportunities for POWER. This person must be able to self-manage, with a strong conceptualization ability and strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills, including the capability to explain complex technical issues at a variety of levels to decision-makers and project teams. The successful applicant must be willing to mentor less experienced engineers and contribute to training material.

Our customers value personal relationships and travel will be required on occasion to work successfully in a customer focused, project-oriented environment.

Required Education/Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is required

  • Ten (10) years of industry experience performing studies in technical disciplines described above for AC systems and/or DC lines (where applicable)

  • Strong understanding of fundamental electrical engineering principles, including but not limited to electromagnetics and their impacts on power systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills including proposal writing, report writing, and other technical writing

  • Experience with ATP, PSCAD, DigSILENT, EPRI T-Flash, EMTP, SWRATE, CAFEP, POLARIS, I2G LPE, CDEGS, or equivalent software packages

Desired Education/Experience

  • Power Systems focused MSEE or PhD

  • PE or equivalent

  • Experience in customer focused engineering projects in the technical areas above

  • Experience with COMSOL Multiphysics software and/or Polaris-EMF

Base Salary Range: $105,000.00 - $225,000.00 per year

The range for this position is being displayed in compliance with all state and local regulations. Salaries are set based on a number of factors to include an individual's job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and education. This means that no two candidates are alike. The range provided above does not include additional compensation such as bonus, health benefits, vacation, 401(k) match, etc.
