POSITION SUMMARY:
The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform custodial cleaning and light building maintenance of City buildings. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in city buildings and the immediate grounds surrounding the building. Assignments could include providing cleaning services at the Nampa Police Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintains buildings and grounds by cleaning, sweeping, mopping, dusting, polishing, and vacuuming; includes scrubbing, spot cleaning carpets and disinfecting, emptying, cleaning and lining waste receptacles and disposing of trash; cleans glass, moves and sets up furniture and/or equipment, mixes chemicals for desired strength and proper and safe use, removes snow from walkways, parking areas and roofs; replaces lights as needed.
Checks assigned areas for maintenance needs.
Maintains buildings and equipment by performing minor repair functions; checking with supervisor and arranging for repairs of more involved needs.
Secures buildings by locking doors, turning off lights, closing windows, and reporting suspicious or unauthorized individuals.
Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned and attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
Ability to use initiative and independent judgments within established procedural guidelines.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
Thorough knowledge of proper facility maintenance techniques and materials, proper cleaning methods and safe use of cleaning materials, disinfectants, custodial tools and equipment including hand and power tools and other equipment used in facility maintenance and custodial work.
Thorough knowledge of basic safety practices and equipment related to work.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Ability to safely use hand tools.
Ability to recognize unusual, inefficient, hazardous or problem activities and take appropriate action.
Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions and perform shop mathematics.
Ability to prepare accurate and reliable record keeping.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) required
Experience:
3+ years of experience in custodial work and/or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Computer Skills:
Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
Certifications & Licenses:
Valid State of Idaho Driver's License
Other Requirements:
Must pass an extensive background check, a pre-employment drug test, and a polygraph test.
