POSITION GENERAL SUMMARY


The Ada County Landfill Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe operation of heavy equipment at the landfill for the purpose of covering, loading and/or compacting waste or soil in an efficient and safe manner.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:


The work of this class is to accomplish routine work associated with the needs of the Ada County Landfill. This position works under the direction of the Landfill Operations Supervisor and at times will independently handle routine problems as they arise.


Essential Functions


+ Performs pre- and post-operation inspection of the equipment in accordance with Company policy to ensure windows, lights, mirrors and rear-view camera are clean;


+ Safely and efficiently operate equipment that may include: forklift, excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader, elevating scraper, dump truck, compactor, hydraulic excavators, backhoe, tipper and roller, and other equipment using proper safety standards;


+ Continuously monitors waste for evidence of unacceptable waste in materials;


+ Continuously monitors the condition of the equipment to ensure it is always operationally ready to minimize down time; clean tracks or wheels on equipment, as needed;


+ Performs and documents minor service on equipment, referring more complicated mechanical issues to Maintenance Shop for repair;


+ Follows and enforces all required safety policies and procedures.


ADDITIONAL FUNTIONS:


+ Performs other duties as required.


Job Requirements


+ High school diploma or equivalent;


+ Minimum of one (1) year related experience in equipment operation;


+ Commercial Drivers License (CDL) preferred;


+ Knowledge of construction materials and methods;


+ Knowledge of safety policies and procedures;


+ Knowledge of the operation of heavy equipment;


+ Knowledge of laws, ordinances and rules involved in equipment operation;


+ Skill in operating advanced landfill equipment such as a laser level and a GPS;


+ Skill in operating large heavy equipment;


+ Skill in time management skills;


+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;


+ Ability to work effectively with contractors with crews performing public refuse disposal and environmental inspection activities;


+ Ability to perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment;


+ Ability to record work activities and maintain daily logs and journals;


+ Ability to detect needed repairs to make necessary operations adjustment;


+ Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently;


+ Ability to identify hazardous or special waste and take appropriate reporting action;


+ Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;


+ Ability to use a computer with MS Office software;


+ Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;


+ Ability to safely perform all tasks;


+ Ability to adhere to work schedule;


+ Ability to act in professional, courteous manner.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:


+ This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing;


+ The employee must pass a pre-employment background check prior to hire;


+ Must possess and maintain a valid Idaho drivers license in order to operate a county vehicle;


+ Work is performed at the Ada County Landfill facility or other County-owned locations.


Work Environment & Physical Demands


+ Most of the work is performed outside, in cramped quarters, on uneven ground, and is subject to climatic conditions and in inclement weather in open areas;


+ The incumbent will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment when handling wastes and responding to spills,


+ The incumbent is exposed to dust, hot water, cuts and burns, and may be exposed to refrigerant gases and landfill gas;


+ Exposure to dust, fumes, weather extremes and hazardous materials such as solvents, adhesives, paints, hot oil and other chemicals;


+ May be required to wear personal protective equipment;


+ The incumbent may be required to negotiate fences, hazardous or steep terrain with rough, rocky and or slippery surfaces;


+ Must have the physical ability to climb ladders, stairs and work off of catwalks;


+ May be required to lift up to 50 lbs. pushing/pulling trash containers and other objects, sitting and climbing;


+ May be required to work weekends, nights, holidays and on an on-call basis.
