Common Job Search Myths


There’s a lot of information and the web and in other places regarding job seeking. You you seek it out yourself when you’re hunting for Boise jobs. There is plenty of good advice to be found, but you should also be wary of the flawed logic and the occasional myths that accompany job searching. Here are the some of the most common ones, courtesy of Alison Green of U.S. News.

Myth #1: “It is all about who you know.” This one has been popping up since the day job hunting was born and will probably stick around a little while longer. To set the record straight, making connections in your trade is a good thing, and it can be helpful. When it comes down to it all, however, your skills, experience and the way you present yourself is what is going to land you that job. Not who you know.

Myth #2: “No one reads cover letters.” Cover letters aren’t nearly as superfluous as many people would like to think they are. A solid cover letter can elevate an otherwise pedestrian job application. Since there is no way of knowing whether or not a hiring manager will read your letter or not, it always best to have one, unless the company you’re applying to explicitly tells you not to submit one.

Myth #3: “Employers will respond immediately if they are interested.” Don’t be surprised if you don’t hear back from an employer right away; response times can range anywhere from a week to a month (or longer than that), regardless of how interested they are in you.

Myth #4: “Resumes should only be one page.” The one page resume is no longer the standard. These days, two or even three page resumes are becoming increasingly common. If your experience and education exceeds one page, don’t sweat it.
